REFORESTATION
Reforestation in not only a complex process requiring professional knowledge but also a process requiring money. Replanting costs per hectare are about three thousand litas. The price includes soil preparation, seedlings, transport costs, work. The largest part of the costs includes labor and seedlings. The most expensive is oak replanting. On the other hand, the costs are not everything because the forest must be replanted within three years. Failing to replant you going to deal with strict penalties and fines. But if we will stick to the rules one can rest assured that in Lithuania there will be enough forests.
There are several reforestation methods:
- Spontaneous forest growth, new trees grow from naturally seeded seeds from nearby trees or from stumps, roots remaining after harvestings.
- Artificial reforestation - plants and seedling are planted by technical mechanisms or man-power.
- Mixed reforestation - all above mentioned methods - in the same areas we find spontaneously growing trees and those that occurred with people help.
Reforestation is a perfect possibility to restore the forests, choose the desired tree species and, with a tree breeding achievements, form healthy forests. Seeded into the prepared soil seedlings require little or no supervision. The big advantage is that the nursery can be planted where it previously has not been increased, low-valued trees and shrubs can be replaced by the preferred tree species. If a number of viable, undamaged trees remain after the harvesting or there is a hope that preferred tree species will grow up, the forest is left to grow spontaneously.
Seedlings
Sowing is the oldest way of reforestation. Only much later reforestation was carried out by planting seedlings and afterwards - plants grown up in forest nursery gardens. Forest is planted in early spring when the soil is still wet because for seeds germination humidity, warmth, air, and then light (chlorophyll) is necessary. Seedlings are the trees grown up without replanting and plants are the seedlings transplanted in nurseries and being grown up there for about three years until they are planted into the forest. Seedlings naturalize better when their roots are undercutted. This helps to form smaller root system with a higher fine root level. Benefits are - convenience of planting and easier naturalization.
Plants
Breeding forests for planting it is necessary to use plants grown in nurseries. Sowing in the forest nurseries is very different from sowing grown in the forest. First, at nurseries a land is well cultivated and fertilized, weeds are destroyed and plants are drilled. Crops are intensively watered, fertilized, weeded out. The age and size of the plants depend on tree species, location, climate and soil preparation methods. For example, many deciduous trees species are ready to be planted being two years old. Oak plants are ready to be planted at the age of 3-4 years. In order to naturalize better and to grow faster it is advised to covet plants' roots with clay. Roots treated like this stay moist longer. All tree species are planted with different closeness. The difference in closeness depends on the plot condition. In fertilized plots fewer trees per hectare are planted because they grow quickly and need more space.
